The underlying concept of the Center for Children is to provide a streamlined approach to the treatment of children with physical disabilities through the creation of a comprehensive outpatient facility. With the recent advances in surgical, medical and therapeutic approaches and procedures, it has become increasingly difficult for caretakers and providers to facilitate a unified care plan to treat complex physical problems in childhood. As a result, the care of children with such disabilities has often been fragmented, repetitious and inefficient. The goal of the Center for Children is to revolutionize the provision of services to these children by creating a seamless, multi-disciplinary setting in which to provide all necessary treatment for these children.
Few facilities in the United States are properly structured to provide interdisciplinary care. The Center for Children combines the services of the Hospital for Joint Diseases, New York University Medical Center, and Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine. This enables us to give no deference to a single modality or subspecialty. Due to the joining of these services, state-of-the-art techniques throughout each discipline are possible. This also provides the parent with a consensus for the treatment of their child eliminating the confusion of varied opinions that so often exist when a decision needs to be made.
The care givers in our group include a Neurologist, Neurosurgeon, Orthopedic Surgeon, Physiatrist, Physical/Occupational Therapist and Nurse Clinician. Others involved include the Pediatrician, Geneticist, Developmentalist, Psychologist, Child Life Specialist, Social Worker, Speech Therapist, Urologist and the Pediatric Sub- Specialists.
