The goal of the service is to meet the medical and physical needs of patients and their families so our patients can become happy, healthy and productive adults. The Hospital for Joint Diseases (HJD) and the Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine (RIRM) have partnered to create this important service provided by the Center for Children.  The service provides outpatient rehabilitative care and on-site educational programs for children and their caregivers at HJD.

The needs of our children are complex; therefore treatment is organized around a rehabilitation team.  The team works together to develop patient-specific short and long-term goals and monitor each child's progress to ensure the goals are met.  The rehabilitation team consists of the following health professionals:

  • Pediatric Physiatrist
  • Physical therapist
  • Occupational therapist
  • Nursing
  • Speech and language pathology
  • Swallowing
  • Vocational services
  • Psychology
  • Therapeutic recreation
  • Social work
  • Orthotist
  • Prosthetist

Depending on the needs of the individual patient, the team will be expanded to include urologic, neurologic, neurosurgical and orthopaedic consultation services.  Additional consultation services are easily provided at the Center for Children because these physicians are located at the Center and are readily available to treat your child.  This allows for more coordinated, efficient and convenient care.
