Institute for Limb Lengthening, Reconstruction, and Realignment of New York There are many reasons why children may suffer from a deformed leg or arm. They may have a congenital anomaly, meaning they were born with the problem, or they may have
suffered a trauma, tumor or infection that has left their limb short, crooked or both. Children may develop a problem in a limb over time for reasons that we do not fully understand. Left untreated, these
children are often destined to a life of disability, problems with self-image and pain. In the new millenium, most children can be treated effectively in a variety of ways, from surgical intervention to exercises,
braces and new modalities for muscular strengthening.Children, adolescents and adults with limb length inequalities and upper and lower extremity deformities will be treated in a specialized unit.
The operative correction of these patients is difficult and requires prolonged intensive post-operative care. The physicians, nurses, therapists, and orthotists (brace and prosthesis makers) must work together to
achieve a successful outcome. The goal of restoring function to these patients is met using the most recent technology. Computerized deformity analysis and treatment as well as a hands-on approach to the overall
care of these patients are utilized. Advanced orthopedic devices, some of which have been designed at Hospital for Joint diseases and New York University Hospitals Center, will enable complex problems to be solved
in an efficient and effective manner. Children and young adults with joint problems and arthritis are evaluated and treated in an attempt to avoid total joint replacement at a young age. Exercise, medication,
and surgery such as complex osteotomies (realignment of the limb) about the hip, knee, and ankle, can eliminate painful arthritis in young patients and allow them normal function for many years. A
straight or longer limb does not solely determine a successful outcome. Children, who are happy, emotionally sound and well adjusted is the real test. The stresses of the treatment, therapy and surgery are great
upon the child and family. A team of psychologists and social workers will be assigned before, during and after to help the child and family through this time. This center is designed for the patient to be able
to interact with the various disciplines in achieving a realistic goal. All treatment is coordinated by the facility. To schedule an appointment or to obtain additional information, please contact
