Elly Hammerman Center for the Treatment of Neuromuscular Disorders This division of the Center for Children is the new "home" for a group of Centers specially designed to address the needs of children, adolescents and young adults with specific
lifelong conditions or diseases. These include:
- Cerebral palsy
- Spina bifida
- Muscular dystrophy
- Arthrogryposis
- Down's Syndrome
- Spinal Cord and Brain Injuries
- Spasticity
Children with these conditions frequently have global problems which extend beyond the obvious functional problems with their extremities or spine. These less apparent issues can involve vital and critical
areas. They include neurologic problems of brain development such as retardation and seizures, development and function of the heart, lungs and kidneys, growth, genetic and metabolic problems, as well as important
psycho-social issues for the child and family or caretaker. The critical need to address these global issues is the reason that they have been grouped within the Neuromuscular Division. It has allowed the
development of a team of expert physicians and therapists in each of the required specialties and subspecialties, who are specially trained, knowledgeable and caring, to address these global needs within one
setting. This leads to a better quality of care because it is comprehensive and intercommunicative. Additionally, it is more convenient for the child and caretaker to have all medical care available in one
physical place! To schedule an appointment or to obtain additional information, please contact (212) 598-2330 or email us at HJD.ChildrensCenter@med.nyu.edu |
