The Clinical Immunology Laboratory of the Hospital for Joint Diseases was founded in 1979 by Parvin Merryman, Ph.D.
and became a fully New York City-licensed laboratory in 1984 with Ping Louie, BS, MBA as Laboratory Supervisor. The laboratory specializes in the labor intensive tests necessary to diagnose the panoply of
rheumatologic disorders including systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, scleroderma, mixed connective tissue disease, Wegener's granulomatosus and anti-phospholipid syndrome, among others. It acts as
the reference laboratory for these tests for NYU Medical Center. In addition, the laboratory is the referenc laboratory for such National Instiutes of Health-sponsored trials as SELENA (Safety of Estrogens in
Lupus National Assesment Trial) and SACS-SLE (Serologically Active, Clinically Stable Systemic Lupus Erythmatosus Trial). The Laboratory, under the direction of Kathleen A. Haines, MD, is JACHO
