The Initiative for Women with Disabilities
Elly and Steve Hammerman Health & Wellness

The Initiative for Women with Disabilities Elly and Steve Hammerman Health & Wellness Center (IWD) at the Hospital for Joint Diseases is a multi-disciplinary center committed to providing respectful, high quality medical and gynecological services in a fully accessible environment for women with physical disabilities and chronic conditions.

Our center is completely wheelchair accessible including an accessible GYN table and wheelchair accessible scale. At the IWD, we provide medical services and programs to women with a variety of physical disabilities. In conjunction with the medical services other services provided are: the Wellness Center, weekly support groups and monthly educational lecture series. At these series, we have topics on relevant issues as they relate to women’s medical, health, and wellness concerns.

The Center also provides health and wellness programs for women with physical disabilities and chronic conditions. In addition to promoting a healthy lifestyle, these programs help prevent osteoporosis, heart diseases and musculoskeletal pain. Furthermore, these programs reduce the likelihood of developing secondary complications of physical disabilities such as arthritis and contractures. Each participant will have a fitness evaluation by a qualified physical or occupational therapist. This is a unique program empowering women with disabilities to pursue a healthy lifestyle. We emphasize health and wellness as well as education, advocacy and social services.

Services Include:

  • Private nutrition consultations and nutrition seminars
  • Physical therapy and occupational therapy
  • Exercise and fitness adapted for diverse disabilities
    -Aerobic and weight bearing exercise
    -Conditioning, straightening, increasing flexibility
  • Movement & Balance - Tai Chi Classes
  • Stress Management -Yoga and Meditation Classes
  • Acupuncture
  • Complementary medicine
