New Medications Being
Studied

CURRENTLY AVAILABLE RESEARCH TRIAL FOR THE TREATMENT OF OSTEOARTHRITIS OF THE KNEE.

A trial to test if risedronate 5 and 15mg a day or 50mg a week is safe and effective in slowing the progression of osteoarthritis of the knee.

Purpose

To test if risedronate in investigational doses of 5 or 15 mg daily or 50 mg weekly is safe and effective in slowing the progression of osteoarthritis of the knee over a two year period. Patients will receive one of the three doses of active medication or placebo (fake medication). There is only a 1 in 4 chance of receiving the placebo.

Qualifications

Male or female between 40 - 80 years old.

Must have at least one knee with osteoarthritis

Must have knee pain on most days during at least 1 month out of the past 3 months

If you're a female you must not be pregnant or planning to become pregnant during the next 2 years.

May not have had knee surgery on the affected knee

May not have any steroid injections in the knee within 3 months

May not have any Synvisc or Hyalagan injections in the knee within 6 months

May not be using a bisphosphonate medication for osteoporosis (e.g. Fosamax).

May not be using greater than 5mg daily of Prednisone

May not have had treatment with tetracycline within the past 6 months
