Fellowships

The Division of Rheumatology of New York University Medical Center/Bellevue Hospoital Center and the Department of Rheumatology of the Hospital for Joint Diseases (HJD) offer a rheumatology fellowship program emphasizing the scientific and scholarly aspects of the study of musculoskeletal and autoimmune diseases. .

The program accommodates a spectrum of interests varying from the clinical to the almost purely scientific. Each affiliated hospital contributes a unique aspect to the training experience, from the tertiary referral center of HJD, to the vibrant influx of cases in Bellevue. Applicants to the program will usually have completed two or three years of Internal Medicine or Pediatrics and should be board eligible by the end of the first year of fellowship. Minority candidates are encouraged to apply.

The Fellowship Program, Year 1

The Rheumatology Fellowship is a two-year program. The emphasis of the first year is on clinical proficiency, while the ensuing year(s) is on clinical investigation or basic science research. A third year of training may be offered to fellows who distinguish themselves during the program.

Inpatient Consultation

The first year is primarily devoted to clinical medicine, with equal emphasis upon training in inpatient and outpatient rheumatology. Fellows rotate among the affiliated hospitals (Bellevue Hospital Center, HJD, and the Manhattan VA) in which they provide consultation for inpatients with rheumatic diseases. By rotation through these institutions, the fellowship affords exposure to a diverse population of patients and a wide spectrum of rheumatic diseases and management issues.

Fellows must supervised and write admission and progress notes on all service patients at HJD, in both rheumatology and orthopaedic/rheumatology cases. Fellows will be responsible for admission notes and discharge summaries for private cases admitted to the rheumatology service.

Ambulatory Care

A major strength of the fellowship program lies in the wealth of outpatient experiences found within each institution.

During the first year of training, fellows will develop their own panels of patients in each clinic. Clinics are organized according to broad disease classifications (i.e., Lupus, General Arthritis). Each first year fellow will attend three (3) clinics per week: Lupus Clinic (Bellevue Hospital or HJD), Arthritis Clinic (Bellevue Hospital or HJD), and the Rheumatology Clinic at the Manhattan VA. Attendance is expected at all other time except during vacation. If additional cancellation of clinic is unavoidle, clinic directors must be informed, and clinic patients be canceled for that date. Clinics at HJD are open on non-hospital holidays, i.e. Martin Luther King Birthday, President's Day. Clinic holidays vary at different institutions.

To insure a well rounded education, first year fellows on MVA or HJD rotation will select two additional clinics to attend on a weekly basis:

HJD

  • Shoulder Clinic
  • Ambulatory Clinical Research Center
  • Spine Clinic
  • Foot Clinic
  • Hand Clinic
  • Osteoporosis Clinic
  • Pain Clinic

Bellevue Hospital

  • Pediatric Rheumatology Clinic

Attendance at the Osteoporosis Clinic at HJD and Pediatric Rheumatology Clinic at Bellevue Hospital is mandatory for the HJD and Manhattan VA rotations. Observational sessions in the HJD Rheumatology Faculty Practice with private attendings are also encouraged.

The Fellowship Program, Year 2

The second year fellow spends the majority of his or her time on a basic science or clinical research project. The project is chosen by the fellow from among the broad areas of investigation pursued within the loratories and clinical research centers of each institution, and is supervised by one or more faculty preceptors. The project must be approved by a member of the faculty and the program director. It is expected that each fellow¹s research project will be of sufficient quality to be worthy of publication and presentation in national scientific meetings. During this year, the fellow will be encouraged to apply for long-term funding for subsequent career development.

Second year fellows are to maintain their panels in both the Lupus and the general Arthritis clinic every week. Subspecialty clinics such as Pediatric Rheumatology, Osteoporosis, and the orthopaedic clinics are encouraged.

All second year fellows will do up to one month of clinical rotation (ward consultation).

Attendance at all conferences are mandatory for first and second year fellows. Presentations are expected from each fellow at one of these conferences.

The Fellowship Program, Year 3
(Optional)

A third year of research may be offered to outstanding fellows.

The goals of this year are to pursue in greater depth the projects initiated in the prior year and to achieve independence in research.

Fellows have no mandatory clinical responsibilities but are encouraged to continue their Lupus and Arthritis clinics.
