A
diagnosis of cancer or a blood disorder can be overwhelming. But
the place you get treatment need not be. At MSNYU Health's two convenient
Pediatric Oncology and Hematology Programs locations - The Mount
Sinai Hospital and NYU Medical Center - each patient is known by
name, not by case number. The friendly team puts a human face on
tough medicine. Each patient is treated at one campus, but we pull
the faculty and resources of two outstanding medical centers to
provide our patients the most comprehensive care.
Instead
of a factory approach to treating cancer or a blood disorder, the
MSNYU Health Pediatric Oncology and Hematolgy Programs use a team
approach tailored for the needs of each patient and incorporating
innovative skills, research and education.
A
multidisciplinary team of physicians, nurses, social workers, child
life specialists, researchers, and support staff works closely together
to ensure the delivery of comprehensive, high-quality patient care.
They all understand that children with cancer or blood disorders
have different needs from adults, and they are specially trained
to address the special age-appropriate needs of infants, children,
and teens.
These
healthcare providers are well versed in the latest advances in pediatric
oncology because they are also committed to excellence in research
and education. They know the importance of translating new discoveries
in the laboratory into improved treatments as quickly as possible.
On
our Mount Sinai campus, experts in both hematolgy and oncology work
together as a team to care for children with blood disorders or
cancer. Dr. William L. Carroll is the Director of the Pediatric
Hematology/Oncology Program at Mount Sinai Medical Center. He is
also Head of the Combined Program in Pediatric Oncology at the Mount
Sinai and NYU Schools of Medicine. Faculty in the Combined Oncology
Program care for children with cancer at both sites, providing significant
experience in the care of children with more common cancers as well
a very rare or challenging cases. Dr. Margaret Karpatkin leads the
program in pediatric hematology at NYU.
Fundamental
to our approach to children with cancer or blood diseases is the
philosophy that the needs of the individual child and their family
are the center of our care. With compassion, understanding and the
help of our support services, we meet the physical, social and emotional
needs of the child and the family.
The
mission of the MSNYU Health Pediatric Oncology and Hematology Programs
is:
To deliver care in a healing environment that promotes the physical,
emotional and spiritual well-being of children and their families
To ensure the best possible quality of life for each child during
treatment
To use the tools of modern biology to identify the causes of childhood
cancer and blood disorders
To rapidly translate scientific discovery into better treatments
